A Real Dilemma

Eric and I want to go on a little vacation. I used up most of my vacation time on our Costa Rica trip so we can only go for 4 or 5 days, but we can't decide where to go. Life is so hard sometimes.
Here are the options...

New Orleans- Cafe au laits, beignets, gator tours, voodoo

San Francisco- Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Tanner residence

Montreal- Old Montreal, Unibroue, poutine

Print found here

Portland- Coffee, beer, Haystack Rock/Cannon Beach, beards

I've been to New Orleans, we've both been to Montreal, but neither of us have been to Portland or San Fran. Do we go somewhere new or somewhere we've been and loved?
This is gonna be a tough one.

Ahh the Weekend

I had to have some routine blood work done on Friday. I have a pretty intense fear of needles so it definitely wasn't how I would've chosen to start the weekend. Feeling sorry for myself, I booked a massage, manicure and pedicure. That's right. 3 hours of spa time to get over 3 minutes of blood work. It definitely did the trick!

Saturday, for the third weekend in a row, I headed up North where my cousin John married his beautiful bride Stevii in Camrose. It was a full on Scottish affair with kilts, bagpipes and haggis (mmm!). They both looked stunning (check out that badger sporran on John's kilt!).

Congratulations you guys and welcome to the Muirhead clan Stevii!

Blueberry Muffins

Sooo, I have a bit of an issue...

It seems that when I see things on sale I tend to lose all reason and logic. Take the 2 cartons of blueberries sitting in my kitchen. They were 2 for $5 at the grocery store the other day and I thought "2 for $5?! I'd be crazy not to buy them!" To be clear, I could've just bought 1 carton for $2.50, but that didn't seem nearly as appealing.

Needless to say, I'm not even close to finishing all of those darn blueberries so I had no other option than to make blueberry muffins. The thought of making healthy muffins with oat bran and apple sauce crossed my mind, but why make healthy muffins when you can make Browned Butter Blueberry Muffins.

The trick to these is to immediately give them away or freeze them. Otherwise, you'll eat the whole pan. Trust me on this one.

The Sheepdogs

Have you heard these guys yet?

I first heard about The Sheepdogs from my good friend (and new music go-to gal) Carrie. These guys are amazing. They're a throwback to The Guess Who, CCR and Crosby, Stills & Nash. They won Rolling Stone's "Choose the Cover Contest" and are the first unsigned band to ever grace the cover. The best part? They're from Saskatoon!

They'll be opening up for Kings of Leon on the Canadian leg of their tour in September. You can check 'em out here.

Mercury in Retrograde

Last week it seemed that everyone I talked to was having trouble focusing. Phones were on the fritz, iPods were particularily testy and a lovely little virus made its home in my computer. What the?!

It turns out that Mercury in retrograde is to blame. Mercury retrograde is sort of like the cosmic "Murphy's Law." It's said to cause all sorts of mayhem in communications- technology goes beserk, mail gets lost, appointments and travel times get missed. This usually happens around 3 times a year and we're right in the thick of it. It's not all bad though. During Mercury retrograde you're likely to bump into old friends, find lost belongings and things that may have been foggy in the past will become clear to you.

When Mercury is in retrograde, it's a bad idea to start new projects or make important decisions. We should use this time to slow down, reflect on the past, repair relationships and tie up any of life's loose ends.

The retrograde ends on Saturday so fret not about your wonky e mails, phones and iPods. Instead, take some time to reflect and reconnect.

I sound like a total hippy.

Ahh the Weekend

I got to spend the weekend at my friend (and Toque Girl) Michelle's cabin at Clear Lake. Two lake weekends in a row!

The mornings are starting to get chilly around here and you can tell that fall is on its way. There are only so many weekends left to spend sitting in the sun reading fashion magazines. I'm working on convincing Mother Nature that we need an Indian summer. I'll let you know how it goes.

Truck Yeah!

I didn't get a chance to check out the food truck mania last Thursday, but conveniently enough the Perogy Boyz truck was parked a couple blocks from our house last night. We'd have been crazy not to try it, right?!

Perogies: Sauerkraut & Onion, Duck & Saskatoon
Sausage: Knackwurst and Kielbasa

The perogies were amazing, especially the Duck and Saskatoon ones. The Sauerkraut and Onion were good too, but I could've used some sour cream or dip of some sort (is that blasphemous in the gourmet perogy world?).

As we finished our supper, the Fiasco Gelato truck pulled up. Perfect timing!

Eric (my official ice cream model) had Pistachio and Biscotti & Cream flavors while I had Peanut Butter & Saskatoon Berry. Delish!

Check here for updates on all of the Calgary food trucks and their locations.

It's probably a good thing I bought new runners earlier this week. Looks like I'm going to need 'em!

Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting up with a couple of girlfriends on the Bonterra patio. There were 8 or so of us there and most of the girls I had only met once or twice. What an incredible night it turned out to be. It was so nice to hang out with like-mided ladies who loved chatting about travel and art and music (oh my!). We spent over 4 hours on the patio enjoying our little Italian staycation.

It's so easy for girls to get caught up in gossip and negativity, but last night proved that it doesn't have to be that way. Thanks ladies!

Here are a couple dudes just to even things out (because they're pretty cool too)...

Happiness on a Stick!

How fun are these?!

Found:Hip Hip Hooray

I think I would dip the chocolate covered marshmallows in graham cracker crumbs for easy s'mores (because that's what I need...another excuse to make s'mores)!

Ahh the Weekend

We had an amazing time out at Kramer Pond/Buck Lake over the weekend for my family reunion. It's pretty incredible to see four generations of Chamberlains in the same room. Great weather and loads of laughs made it a get together to remember.

What are you up to for lunch?

Well cancel those plans and check this out instead.

"August 11th will be the official launch of The Food Truck Pilot Project. YYC Food Trucks has teamed up with The City of Calgary, Tourism Calgary and The Downtown Calgary Association, to launch the first-ever food truck festival in the city. The event, "YYC Taste The Trucks" will be held on August 11th from 11:00 A.M to 3:00 P.M on Stephen Ave in the Convention Centre Block (100E Stephen Ave). " More info here.

The participating trucks include:
  • Alley Burger
  • Fiasco Gelato
  • Perogy Boyz
  • Fries & Dolls
  • Pimento's Mobile Pizzeria
  • Jojo's BBQ
  • Los Compadres Mexican

Unfortunately, I'm going to be out of town at my family reunion. Can you grab me a burger, some poutine (preferrably with fries fried in duck fat), perogies with sour cream and an espresso gelato?

Great, thanks.

Bye, Bye, Birdie

Our beautiful friend Katrina is flying the coop. To the people of Eugene, Oregon: consider yourselves very lucky.

Katrina was kind enough to ask me to help her out with a "Put a Bird On It" themed party.
Inspiration found here:

And put a bird on it, we did...

How cute are these lemon cheesecake pops?!

Shane Yuhas set up this incredible photobooth...

A big thanks to Sarah for letting me use a few of her pictures.

Good luck Katrina! You will be missed ♥
